Somebody believes
I have just finished reading an amazing presentation from Edgardo G. Gonzales. He and his siblings were raised in one of the poorest areas of the Philippines with a single parent that had 10 children. I am totally amazed and impressed with what the single mother along with her 10 children accomplished with hope and the help of others. Today these children are grown up and highly successful in a variety of professional areas. This can be done and has been done and will be done in the future through sponsorships and aid from charity organizations.
This is an amazing account of what a family that prays together and stays together can be done. Let there be no mistake that poverty is among us. Even in affluent countries like Canada, we are faced with the homeless and the have-nots. Even in the Bible, there are over 300 references to the poor that is among us. Only the numbers have increased as the years go by. This does not have to be for in God’s eyes we are all equal it is only in man that we differ. There always will be a horn of plenty but the quantity that pours out to help the poor can only be improved by the input of those that have more than they need.
I have been with World Vision for over four decades and I have today as I have always sponsored children. I know what can be done and is being done to help the needs of the children that will be the leaders of the future. I sincerely hope that everyone that could read this remarkable achievable life of Edgardo and his siblings is a guiding force to encourage all of us to help those that need it the most.

As a chaplain and author myself, I love to hear people’s stories. But Edgardo’s story is particularly poignant and gripping. As an investor (my husband does not allow us to say donor) with World Vision, I finally heard a full answer to the question Edgardo says people ask him time and again, “What is it like to be a sponsored child?” His book offers not only the hardships but a testimony to the power of somebody believing in another person and the journey of coming to fullness of life. His story brings to life the book’s proposition – “when someone truly believes in us, we learn to believe in ourselves and others as well, because that feeling becomes contagious.” Edgardo also leaves the reader with a compelling encouragement to remember and reach out to those who believed in us as well as to believe in the Almighty and offer the gift of being a person who believes in another. Edgardo, thanks for having the courage to share your story with the world!
- Anne F. Grizzle
Anne Grizzle, LMSW-ACP, is a psychotherapist in private practice in Houston, Texas. A graduate of Harvard College and Columbia University, she is a popular workshop leader and consultant. As author of Mothers Who Love Too Much, she appeared on numerous radio and television shows, including Oprah, Straight Talk, and Donahue.
Edgardo Gonzales’ book, “Somebody Believes”, is a personal account of a life transformed by those who believed in him – his family, his faith community and himself. It is a story about the power of belief that results in the impossible when surrounded by people who truly believe in others.
The underlying story is seeing the hand of God fulfilling His plan for Edgardo and his family through a life of obedience and sacrifice. His openness in sharing his struggles through life’s journey shows that God often uses our pain to trust Him and minister to others.
Edgardo’s story “Somebody Believes” demonstrates that his life has come full circle – from a sponsored child of World Vision at age ten to presently being a philanthropy advisor for World Vision Canada. I personally found “Somebody Believes” to be a very interesting and easy book to read. It is a reminder of what God is able to accomplish in and through us when somebody believes in us, whether it be our family, faith community, ourselves or most importantly God Himself. “Miracles truly happen when somebody believes!”
- Rodney Blyth, Pastor, Teacher, and Longtime Child Sponsor. Rodney is a retired school teacher and community church pastor who walked 6,000 km across Canada during the summer of 2018 raising $64,000 and awareness for Raw Hope emergency relief efforts for children and families impacted by conflict.
